Time flies! I’ve already been interning at Beautiful Books for a whole month. Everyone has been so nice, warm and welcoming it feels more like a family. A very hard working family though, real life deadlines are a bit of a shock used as I am to 3 and 9 month long projects at Uni.

My first big project was producing the June-December catalogue. Publishers send out catalogues of the titles they are realising every season to Press, PR, Book Shops, Distributors, Buyers, etc. It has to stand out and portray the books in the best possible light. I went through dozens of catalogues to have an idea of what other publishers were doing. My absolute favourites were Granta & Portobello Books by Dan Mogford and art book publishers Laurence King by Pentagram.

The finished product is a 42 page A5 booklet that we are getting back from the printers this week. I will post pictures then but I couldn’t help posting the digital files now, I’m very happy with the outcome.

This is the cover spread, cover and back cover (with Ryan’s infinite help) wasn’t keen on Didot at first but after a bit (a lot) of tweaking I learned to love it:

I spent a lot of time considering the layout for the book spreads trying 1, 2, 3 and 4 column combinations different type, blank space, dimensions and colours as they are after all the most important pages on the catalogue. Left page, easiest to navigate, features the key elements: Cover, Title, Author, References and Key Points and to the right detailed information.

The accent colour compliments the cover for each spread making every one unique:

I wanted to use the blank space to highlight the left page and make all the information float nicely:

Quick exercise we did in Typography class today. Given a brief article by Emil Ruder and two images we were asked to design a two page spread in less than one hour using at least one of the swiss typefaces and paying special attention to grids and the blank space.

This is the first version, I realised the two images did not balance the composition very well:

Final version, I changed the title from black to cyan to go with the main ideas, moved the image on the right and created some space to balance everything out:

The article is actually a very interesting read and sums up Ruder’s ideas on limited edition books and publications: ‘A Book must be beautiful and cheap’

A project I worked on earlier this year, Sans Soleil is a 64 page book inspired by the Japanese aesthetics of Wabi Sabi and the imperfect, impermanent, and incompleteness of Beauty. Borrowing the words from Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil (1983). I had a lot of fun with this book!

‘Ah well… after all, history only tastes bitter to those who expected it to be sugar coated.’

‘All women have a built-in grain of indestructibility. And men’s task has always been to make them realize it as late as possible. African men are just as good at this task as others. But after a close look at African women I wouldn’t necessarily bet on the men.’

This last one comes from one of my favourite scenes in the film.
